TRZ Year in Review 2020 - Just Drive

Jord: On one fateful Saturday in Spring 2019, I was insanely bored, scraping the bottom of the barrel for anything to do. So, I decided to play the game Sly 2: Band of Thieves on PS3. In the opening level, your team is attempting to pull off a heist in Paris, the target being the nightclub of a sleazy lizard named Dmitri. When you’re in the nightclub (and in the level’s boss battle), there is a SICK French EDM beat that plays on a constant loop. It hit me so hard that I put down the game and immediately started programming the kick drum & bassline into Logic. Within the hour, the first verse and chorus of Just Drive were written.

This song is just about generally feeling claustrophobic, which is something I experience heavily were my anxiety to kick in. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen too often :) 

I use the F-word in this song, which is a first for us. I begged the guys that we should take it out, but they wouldn’t let me.

CB: When I first heard Jord’s demo, I knew we had to release this one STAT. Because, frankly, it bangs. It’s true that he wanted to take out the f-word (fuck) but the rest of us took a majority vote to say it stays, on account of sounding really cool. I wrote my part of the verse while quite literally Just Driving. Makes you think. 

I remember playing this live for the first time in Denver, and most of the crowd was spread far from the stage. But by god, when this song started, we got all (12) people in the venue up to the front and vibing. Good times.

Fun fact: the album art is frankenstein’d using my eyes and Jord’s nose/mouth.
